Nappy Irritation
- Redness, lesions, swelling or spots on your baby’s bottom, thighs and genitals.
- The location of irritation may also be hot to touch.
- Your baby’s behavior might seem more troubled – they may cry when touched or washed, and wake frequently in the night because of discomfort.
Treatment and prevention are very similar when it comes to nappy irritation – both involve following some simple hygiene recommendations. This includes changing your baby’s nappy whenever it’s soiled, giving your baby nappy free time and using gentle products that are specially developed for your baby’s delicate skin. The best way to deal with nappy skin is to avoid the baby from getting it in the first place. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
- Change your child's nappy five to seven times a day to keep the nappy area free of any irritation.
- Be sure to use the right nappy size. If it’s too tight, it can cause irritation. Test the nappy with your finger: it should fit easily between the skin and the nappy cuffs.
- Allow air to get to your baby’s bottom as often as possible through occasional ventilation. For example, let him go nappy-free during winding.
- When you go out, remember to take a clean nappy with you, so your child doesn’t stay in a soiled one for too long.
- Remember to always keep their skin clean, but daily bath isn’t recommended as it tends to dry out the skin.
- Use clean, lukewarm water when cleaning your baby. Avoid using soap as it can irritate the skin.
- After cleaning, allow your baby’s bottom to dry in open air for a few minutes.
- Avoid perfumed toiletries or wipes.
Use a baby ointment during every nappy change, especially at bedtime when the nappy is on for the longest period to help protect your baby's sensitive skin. Lightly massage the ointment into the bottom to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier.
Baby ointment helps sensitive skin to repair its natural protective barrier while keeping it soft, smooth and moisturized. It forms a transparent protective barrier on the skin, letting the skin breathe and protecting it from the irritants. Choose a baby ointment that is non-sticky, easy to clean, and can be applied effortlessly. It also help if it's free from fragrances, colorants and preservatives that may irritate your baby’s delicate skin.
